Our Mental Health
At Flax Bourton Primary School, we believe that mental health and wellbeing are the basis for a happy and successful life at school and beyond. We are committed to promoting positive mental health for all our children, staff and families. We strive to create a sense of security within our school community and to ensure that every child feels nurtured and supported, whatever they may be feeling or facing.
The Department for Education outline the importance of promoting and supporting good mental health in schools. Good mental health and wellbeing helps children and young people:
- develop
- attend school
- engage in learning
- fulfil their potential
At Flax Bourton we contribute to positive mental health and wellbeing by providing:
- A safe, calm and supportive learning environment
- Regular input on ‘speak and to stay safe’, including the approach of 5 trusted adults
- Early targeted support for pupils and learners who need help
- PSHE lessons which discuss topics such as being different, our dreams and goals, relationships, changes in our bodies and being healthy
- Whole-school worships and class worships which talk about our school’s values to help children become genuinely kind and inspirational individuals
- We also use opportunities like Children’s Mental Health Week and World Mental Health Awareness Day to emphasise the importance of mental health and remind the children of strategies to help identify how they are feeling and address needs as they arise.
In the first instance, we encourage you to talk to your child's class teacher about any mental health concerns or questions you might have.
They may then refer you on to our SENDCo, Headteacher or our Senior Mental Health Lead; Mrs Donna Williams.
